Tea

Tea grows in hot, tropical climates. Countries like China and Sri Lanka are famous for their tea cultivation and culture. But did you know excellent tea is also grown in Kenya, Tanzania and Argentina? Tea plantations are often a significant source of employment in the region. Villages in the vicinity of plantations often benefit from the presence of organisations working to improve conditions in and around the plantations. For example, the income from sustainable tea cultivation might be used to build a school, while the television in the community centre also brings people closer together.

Tea cultivation

It is important when growing tea that the plant is in nutrient rich soil, preferably in higher regions. The relative humidity and temperature are slightly lower in these areas and this improves the quality. Tea plantations are divided up into gardens. A different garden is harvested from every day. Only the young shoots of the shrub's branches are picked. Picking is an art in itself and is often done by women. The premiums received by the plantations go towards  tools and employee training.
